Norte Chico

Another weekend trip up north. 6 hour bus ride, leaving Thursday night after classes, returning Monday morning 3 hours before class. Despues, esta muy consada!! Destinations> started out at the beach in La Serena and worked our way east to Vicuna and Pisco Elqui.

Hit the beach first thing, 7 en la manana! Nobody out, very peaceful...Cool but crisp, we sat by the light house for a long time jus soakin up that morning sun and listeing to the shore break.

My Chilean tio owns cabins right on the beach so we got hooked up for cheap. Went to the supermercado for groceries and made dinner, Asado bbq American style..hamburgueses con a Chilean spice! Spice being homemade pebre (sorta like pico de gallo, but better!), guacamole y pan, por supuesto! siempre pan!!

Yeah that taste goood! Especially after a long day of travelling and venturing!

A little bit later after a few glasses of Cristal (cerveza not the champagne), a little game we like to call Mapuche. Yeah, don't ask, we made it up but it was really fun and funny.

Museums ....museums...

Anthony, I mean Antonio, in front of a Moai. Monolithic rock carvings from the Polynesians of Rapa Nui, or Isla de Pescua. The southeasternmost point of the Polynesian triangle and special territory of Chile.

La Serena....a city born during the Spain conquist, it is Chile's second largest city. Lots of antique churches with colonial style architecture. I guess we lucked out becauses it was La Serena's birthday celebration weekend, so there were parades and music all over town! These kids were soo cute, dressed up to represent every central and southamerican country.

Exausted from our long bus ride, we went to this huge japanese garden and took a lil nap. Tranquil place in the middle of the city. Lol...a moment I think "Life's rough"

Destination 2. Vicuna, 1 hour east of La Serena, a cozy village with low adobe houses. Also the birthplace of one of Chile's most famous poets, Gabriela Mistral. (serious, they love this woman, her face is on thier money) South America's first Nobel Prize for literature in 1945.

Yeess..scored another cabana! This one had a pool too...it was a little murky, and super cold, but i was dying to get in the water, so it was perfect for a little pre breakfast swim.

Group pic!! walkin to the bus terminal...

Yeah! One of my favorite bus rides yet...An hour of gorgeousness, sun and good tunes on my ipod.

Leah couldn't resist "He's only a puppy!" One of the many street dogs of Chile.

Destination 3. Pisco Elqui. smallest of the 3, in heart of Chile's pisco production. A liquor distilled from grapes with a large dispute between Chile and Peru over the right to produce and promote the grape brandy. Pretty much the only liquor I drink over here...piscola or piscosour

Pisco at the distileria de Mistral. Yes this woman has got her own brand of pisco as well, and a very fine pisco at that.

Snowboarding in Los Andes

Valle Nevada. A beatiful sunny day, sunglasses and sunblock needed foo shoo....Not too crowded, in and on the ski lift no problemo!
Spectacular views that changed every five minutes as we zig zagged our way up the Andes.
No spills, biffs, eating shit for me this trip! I thank the weather, the peacefullness or my training on Mt Hood.
